Recreation Billiards, better known as “Rec” by its patronage, is truly a downtown Winston-Salem institution. Opened in 1947 by George Bambalis, this billiards hall and bar has been locally owned by the family for three generations. Well known for its warm and welcoming staff and attitude, Recreation Billiards has witnessed the coming and going of many 4th Street businesses while remaining steadfast in the same address for 70 years.
In 2006, Recreation Billiards began remodeling the establishment. They wisely kept things that reflected their significant history, and contemporized without losing the flavor of their origins. In doing so, Recreation Billiards was considered a “Small Wonder Bar of the Year” in a nationwide competition.
The bar offers distilled beverages, wine, 16 craft brew beers on draught and another 50 or so in the bottle. There’s live music on Tuesday. See their facebook page for specials on billiards play, liquor, and beer. “Rec” is open 7 days a week.
